BEHIND THE FLAG

The incident record

What this memorial counts & how the flag works

We use incidents classified as mass shootings or mass public shootings by the AP / USA TODAY / Northeastern University Mass Killing Database, with at least four victims killed, excluding perpetrators. The database includes family and private-location incidents, not only public attacks. Its mass-killing definition uses a 24-hour period.

Dates are recorded at day precision. For this visualization only, each incident is placed at 00:00 UTC on its recorded date; this is not a claim about the actual time of the attack. Incidents on the same date are processed together. Victim counts may be revised as reporting develops.

After each incident, the flag’s height is halved and time per victim is added to the remaining hold. After the hold, the flag rises at a constant rate: 100 percentage points over your selected upward-journey time. A new incident during recovery halves its current height and starts a new hold. Reloading does not reset remembrance.

The app checks the public data feed when opened and every 15 minutes while open. If the feed is unavailable it uses a clearly dated saved copy. A recently fetched feed is not a guarantee of complete reporting. This is an independent symbolic memorial, not an official flag-status notice.
